Total Recall is a 1990 science fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film is set in a future where Earth is overpopulated and people are looking to Mars for a new place to live. Schwarzenegger plays Doug Quaid, a construction worker who is haunted by dreams of Mars and a mysterious woman. To satisfy his curiosity, he visits a company called Rekall, which sells memory implants of virtual vacations. During the procedure, something goes wrong and Quaid s real memories start to resurface. He discovers that he is actually a secret agent named Hauser who had his memory wiped and was given a new identity. He also learns that his wife, Lori, is not who she claims to be and has been sent to spy on him. As Quaid tries to make sense of his true identity, he is pursued by both the authorities and a group of rebels from Mars. He eventually makes his way to Mars, where he meets a woman named Melina who resembles the one from his dreams. Together, they uncover a plot by the Mars administrator, Cohaagen, to control the planet s air supply and suppress the rebels. Quaid and Melina join forces with the rebels and engage in a series of action-packed confrontations with Cohaagen s forces. Along the way, Quaid discovers that his former self, Hauser, had left clues for him to follow in order to bring down Cohaagen and free Mars from his tyranny. In the end, Quaid manages to activate a device that releases the air to the surface of Mars, saving the rebels and allowing the planet to become habitable for the colonists. He also learns that his experiences may have been part of an elaborate memory implant by Rekall, leaving the audience to question the reality of the entire story.
